Postdoctoral position in hydrothermal processes at Institute of Science and Environment of the University of Saint Joseph in Macau

Applications are invited for a 2 years position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Seafloor Hydrothermal Systems, to be based at Institute of Science and Environment of the University of Saint Joseph, in Macau. The fellow is under the project “SWIMAR – The role of ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems in the formation of seafloor deposits: comparison between SWIR and MAR fields“ funded by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT).

Starting date: 1 February 2019

Qualifications required: We are looking for a candidate with a solid background in mineralogy and geochemistry (including isotopic geochemistry) of hydrothermal systems. Previous experience in hydrothermal deep-sea deposits and in different geochemical analytical techniques is also welcome. This position requires a PhD in Earth Sciences/geochemistry or in related fields and a good publication record.

Duties:

  • Perform independent work on mineralogy and geochemistry of hydrothermal deposits and hosted rocks, mainly in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems;
  • Availability to participate in oceanographic missions both in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and/or in the Indian Ridge and in internships abroad (such as SIO, China; FCUL, Portugal, etc) to collect data using different techniques (e.g. EPMA, EM-EDS, XRD, stable and radiogenic isotopic analyses);
  • Report results in international conferences and in scientific publications;
  • Participate in other activities of the lab, such as science promotion events or internal meetings.

Deadline for the application: 30 November 2018

Conditions: 40 hours per week, schedule to be agreed with the supervisor (Professor Ágata Alveirinho Dias). Salary, 20.000,00 MOP/month. Starting date, February, 2018. Expenses to participate in oceanographic missions and to go to labs abroad will be covered.

Selection criteria: Publications in scientific journals and presentations in international scientific meetings in the area of earth sciences (preferentially related with hydrothermal systems): 30%; experience in mineralogical and geochemical analytical techniques and in oceanographic missions: 50%; interview and motivation letter: 20%. Results will be published in December, 2019.

How to apply: Candidates should send the following documents to Prof. Ágata Dias (using the subject line: “PostDoc SWIMAR”; email address: agata.dias@usj.edu.mo):
