ECORD Summer School 2020: Downhole Logging for IODP Science

Returning to the University of Leicester for the fifth year, the ECORD Summer School: Downhole Logging for IODP Science focuses on downhole-logging within the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and the applications of downhole measurements in various geoscientific fields, including paleoclimatology, sedimentology, and broader geological and ecological processes.

Transition of the InterRidge Office to Korea

Year 2019 has been very active for InterRidge, with the organization of three workshops (Workshop on Integrated Multidisciplinary Observations in Vent Environments – IMOVE, in Bergen, Norway; Workshop on Hydrothermal Ore-forming Processes and the Fate of Seafloor Massive Sulfides Deposits along Slow and Ultraslow Spreading Mid-Ocean Ridges, in Hangzhou, China; Workshop on Seamounts and Islands Associated With Mid-Ocean Ridges, in Lisbon, Portugal) and the Theoretical Institute "Hydrothermalism in 4D: current challenges and emer

International workshop DriMMLOC at Tongji University in Shanghai (China)

An international workshop DriMMLOC “Drilling the Mantle, Moho and Lower Oceanic Crust” will be held on 7-9 May 2020 at Tongji University in Shanghai (China). The workshop will present the latest developments across a broad spectrum of earth science disciplines, including tectonics, geophysics, petrology and biogeochemistry to address the main question of how do the styles of formation of the oceanic lithosphere vary with spreading rate and magma supply, and how do these influence hydrothermal alteration and microbial activity.

Crowdfunding for SCOR Visiting Scholars Program

The SCOR Committee on Capacity Building is in the process of evaluating applications for the 2020 class of SCOR Visiting Scholars. As usual, we have more good applications than the funds available. We should be able to support 5 Visiting Scholars in 2020 from traditional sources. For the past several years, we have supported part of a sixth Visiting Scholar through crowdfunding.

HACON expedition to Gakkel Ridge

HACON (Hot Vents in an Ice-Covered Ocean) is the first full-scale multidisciplinary investigation of deep (4000 m) hydrothermal vents under permanent ice cover in the Arctic, investigating the Aurora vent field (82.5°N) in the Gakkel Ridge. The expedition is organized between 19 September and 16 October 2019 on board R/V Kronprins Haakon. Follow the HACON expedition.
